If you are wondering about things to do in Jogja, then you have to descend into Jurassic Park at the Jomblang Cave. Located just by the outskirt of Yogyakarta, Jomblang Cave is one of the most adventurous tourist destination for you who crave for adrenaline rush! It is a part of the cave system that embrace Gunung Kidul region, consisting of over 300 caves. Existed for more than thousands of years, Jomblang Cave becomes a lot tamer after the land is eroded by underground rivers as well as the rainwater. However, if you take a look closer, Jomblang Cave might remind you of Jurassic Park.
Three Gates to Heaven
If you are taking a tour, you will be left in awe through 3 sections of exploration. The first one is Jomblang Cave, the gate of the underworld. The giant cave entrance needs a bunch of bravery, because as you are being lowered to the cave system, you will feel like giant walls are covering you up with a lot of huge trees. The span of the cave is worth 80 meters in depth and 50 meter for its diameter. After you get down to Jomblang Cave, you will reach to the second section of the tour, in which you will be able to witness a huge tunnel that looks endless. When you explore the tunnel, you have to be careful because it slowly narrows. This tunnel is 250 meters long and during the journey, it is highly recommended for you to bring a lighter or anything else to guide you because it is completely a pitch black there.
By the end of the tunnel, you will meet another cavern system, the Grubug Cave, or what many people address as the Gollum’s cave. The cave is relatively smaller with not much space for the rooftop. However, if you come at the right time and the sun still shines brightly outside, you will be able to witness the Heavens Window through the opening of a sinkhole. Even though the sinkhole is a lot narrower than the one in Jomblang’s, the beauty of it intensifies. Thus, the locals call it the Heavens Window because when the sunrays hits into the cave, it will light up the cave and illuminate it with pretty fragmented silver color, just like the imagery of humans peeping through heaven.
Not only that, if you come through Jomblang tunnel, then you will be located just right below the center of the cavern. There will be layers of the cave system, in which if you gaze up at the opening of the cave above, as well as look into the floor cave below, you will be able to see the underground river and listen to its calming and comforting stream. However, it is not recommended for you to drink the water for safety and health reason. What are you waiting for? Put up this place to one of things to do in Jogja to your bucket list and descend into Jurassic park at the Jomblang cave!
