There are a lot of things to do in Jogja besides visiting Malioboro and going to its natural tourist attractions. Since Jogja is a ‘special region’, it means you can visit the palace (Keraton) where the Sultan resides. If you are a type of person who seeks the cultural value of the places you visit, the palace of Jogja is recommended for you.
The palace consists of luxurious halls, pavilions, and spacious courtyards. Originally, there are two separate entrances for men and women. Each of the entrance is guarded by huge male and female dragons. Apparently, this segregation of entering the palace is no longer practised. Some of the inner place in the palace is limited and prohibited for the visitors to visit since the current Sultan lives here. Yet, the visitors can enter the courtyards surrounding the palace and enter the museum. The palace also holds daily performances which visitors can enjoy. The daily performances are gamelan, wayang, classical dance, and Javanese poetry reading. Outside the palace, the visitors can go to the northern square and the southern square. These two places are full of the local street foods when the night comes.
Besides visiting the palace, Taman Sari is also one of the tourist attractions which visitors would like to visit. It is known as a Water Castle because there is an area in Taman Sari which was used by the princesses to bathe. There is a large pool in the middle of the Taman Sari. It is said that the Sultan loves to seem them bathe and would like to ‘hunt’ them to be his wife or a concubine. The famous place of Taman Sari is the pool area though there is another place which can be visited. For example, there is a tunnel which is originally built for hiding the Sultan family or escaping route when the place was attacked. This tunnel becomes a tourist photo spot because the tunnel is hard to be found in a modern building. Taman Sari is easy to reach from the Sultan Palace. It only takes approximately around 10 to 15 minutes by walking.
These two places, Sultan Palace and Taman Sari Water Castle, are places among such tourist destinations which strongly recommended to be visited. These two places hold cultural history and value. If you are tired of going to Malioboro or Gunung Kidul area, visiting Sultan Palace and Taman Sari is on top of your things to do in Jogja list.
