There are several things to do in Borobudur that you surely will enjoy. Although most people thought that the temple of Borobudur is located in the Special Region of Yogyakarta, most of them are mistaken since the temple itself is actually located in the area of Magelang Regency. This article will be discussing what you can do in Magelang!
- Having a feast of Sop Senerek
The first thing that you can do when you are visiting the area around Borobudur is to head to a local restaurant which serves sop senerek- an Indonesian name of a dish which can be translated into a red soup. Although the dish itself is less famous compared to kupat tahu, it is still a tasty dish, nonetheless. It is made of slices of carrots, some red beans, diced beef, and spinach. Oh, do not forget the tasty broth! There are several restaurants around the temple which serve the dish, but it is recommended that you head farther to the city and find a restaurant named Pak Parto since their sop senerek is simply the best.
- Enjoying the temple
The next one of the things to do in Borobudur is, obviously, enjoying the temple itself! Well, what can we say? You surely would find the largest Buddhist temple in the world to be a satisfying destination to visit, would you not? Besides, you would find the carvings and the statues of the temple which was built at around 8th to 9th century mesmerizing since the details and the level of art are simply unparalleled! Aside from the historical and artistic features, the scenery that you can find when you are on the temple is absolutely amazing with the combination of lush rainforest, a wide rice paddy, and the mighty Merapi volcano. Oh, by the way, the sunrise and the sunset here are so wonderful!
- Visiting the hidden Gereja Ayam
No, it is not like what you are thinking since the church we are talking about here is not hidden beneath the temple- cut off that conspiracy theory potential! The church is actually located at the middle of a forest near the temple and it is actually not designed to resemble a chicken, but rather, a dove. Well, the locals disagree since they interpret the design to look like a chicken, hence its popular name. This is a good place to enjoy a sunrise-it is actually a better place to do so compared to Borobudur since it is not as crowded as the temple. Well, those are the things to do in Borobudur!
